Director Takuya Uchiyama was inspired by familiar observations across France, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan in the making of “The Young Strangers,” a tragic story about Ayato Kazama (played by Yuto Isomura), a construction worker by day and karaoke bar manager by night.
Coming off the success of “Sasaki in My Mind” (2020), which swept the newcomer award, Director Uchiyama dives into circumstances that are common for many people around the world but not often told.
Ayato bears the weight of not only his two jobs, but also as the caretaker for his mother who suffers from an incurable illness and debtor in place of his late father. He desperately seeks happiness despite his woes, a journey that eventually leads to his death.
